OLIVER Lord Protector, of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland & the Domminions thereto belongeing. To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting.
Whereas we have been informed that by a new Invention an Engine is lately framed of great importance to the Commonwealth of England, Scotland & Ireland for drayneing of lands ouer-flowed with water, watering of Lands wanteing water, supplying of water-trenches for carrying & conueying of Boates from place to place, rayseing of water to serue Cittyes or Howses, as likewise for Clearing, drayneing & avoydeing the Springs & falls of waters from Mynes of Sylver & other metall, Coales Jett & all Quarryes of stone or slate & like workes of what depth soeuer the same be within the earth, which vsually annoy the same./. the riseing water being constantly Counterpoysed./. And which without a very great expence in servants, wages, horses or the like, cannot be gained or wrought vpon by reason of the waters springeing in or falleing into the same, Which said Invention & Engine is now brought to perfection by the labor industry & dilligence, & by the proper Costs & Charges of Iohn Rushworth Esquire & of those whose Interest he hath therein, of which Invention & Engine he the said Iohn Rushworth is the true owner & first Inuentor by himselfe & by those his Agents whose meanes & Indeauors he hath vsed in and about the same. And forasmuch as the said Invention & Engine is & may be of very great vse to the Publicke in diuerse places of the 3. Nations of England Scotland & Ireland, & other the Dominions thereto belonging & was neuer till now brought to perfect vse or practise And whereas the said Iohn Rushworth hauing iustly merited

recompence and priuiledge for this his Invention, & for his expences in attaineing therevnto hath by his petition Desired our letters Pattents of priuiledge for the sole vseing of his said Inuention & Engine for 14 yeares according to the statute in that Case prouided, together with such further powers and prouisions concerning his vseing and the Enjoyment of the said Inuention or Engine[H alters from Ensigne] as are requisite in the mannagement thereof, which by law is due, and ought to be graunted vnto him. Now know yee etc
