Two handled posset pot decorated with slips and dated 1696. Darker slip has been trailed and jewelled over a cream coloured slip coating. Main decoration is a design of stylised flowers. Initials IB and RF are inscribed on the the front of the pot. Around the rim reads, 'THE BEST IS NOT TOO GOOD FOR YOU'.
The term posset pot loosely describes a variety of large cup with two or more handles. Many ?posset pots? may never have been intended to hold posset at all. Another term for these vessels and other two-handled cups is ?loving cup?. Posset has a popular drink throughout the 17th and 18th century but declined in popularity during the 19th century. Posset is made from hot milk curdled with ale or wine, often spiced wit cinnamon, ginger or nutmeg.
[NOTE: In Holme (1688), Academy of Armory, posset only refers to vessels with a spout.]
