A Lambeth delft armorial footed punch bowl, dated 1701. The interior with the arms of the Saddlemakers’ Company. Bordered with cloud-scrolls and flower sprays, and the exterior with winged cherubs among flowers and stylised foliage.
The Saddlemakers Company is one of the oldest of the City of London Livery companies. The earliest surviving records of a Guild of Saddlers in London date from circa 1160 AD, although the guild could well pre-date that. The Company was given authority over the saddlery trade as early as 1272 by King Edward I.
This is possibly a wedding plate - plates with three initials and a date often commemorated a marriage. Generally the initial at the top, here ‘R’, refers to the surname of the husband and wife, whilst the two initials below, ‘G+E’, refer to their Christian names.
