English delft pint mug with a painted inscription in blue 'Be ware of the fox' and a red fox. Blue lines and foliage also painted around the body of the vessel.
Beware of the fox is a pun on the word 'fox' which in Early Modern England meant to intoxicate or befuddle (see Samuel Pepys' Diary 26 Oct. 1660 '...The last of whom I did almost fox with Marget ale')
