These are to certify your worships that the bearer hereof Roger Rigby of Pemberton in the parish of Wigan husbandman, having been for these many years together licenced by some of the King's Majesty's Justices of the Peace to keep ale to sell, and is now upon malice and causeless displeasure threatened by some to be put down notwithstanding for these twenty years and upwards and since his coming into Pemberton he hath been reputed and taken amongst his neighbours for a very honest and true poor man, and hath always painfully and carefully laboured to maintain his wife and children as we whose names hereunder written can well witness.
