May it please your worships to understand that whereas your poor petitioner having kept inn in Manchester 22 years and above and never was convicted of any misdemeanour but hath from time to time paid all lays taxations and impositions whatsoever imposed upon him with the best of his rank and quality and not only kept a soldier under Major Radcliffe but furnished himself upon his own charge with arms and served himself in his own person as a solider upon any occasion for the good and safeguard of the town, and still will be [loyal] for the King and Parliament, as occasion shall be offered both with body and purse, to do the best service he can, and now since god's own immediate hand befell upon the town and your poor petitioner having all his means forth of his hands and nothing to maintain himself wife and family but only by keeping an innhouse which your petitioner will be careful to observe and keep good order not having any other means for his maintenance… May it therefore please your worships to take your poor petitioner's cause into your grave godly considerations and to permit and allow him to brew and keep inn upon his good behaviour being well furnished with such furniture and necessaries as are fit for that calling, otherwise your poor petitioner is utterly undone and overthrown, not being Master of any trade your petitioner by god's blessing resolving with himself never to give any offence to any officer of the town by his miscarriage or any company that he will keep in his house at any unlawful time and your petitioner shall be daily bounden as in duty bounded together in with his wife and family daily to pray to god for your health and happiness.
