Worthy gentlemen, I am letten understand that one Nicholas Grundy of Kearsley my tenant upon some occasion is discharged for brewing the circumstance of the matter is better known to you than me and I am very unwilling to move you in such business but however in regard it hath been an ancient alehouse and one that stand so near my coalpit to fit my workmen with small drink and victuals I am constrained to entreat your lawful favour to consider of the premises, and if you find the occasion laid against him to be more of malice than matter I do persuade myself you will look upon him in another manner. If I had not some knowledge of his behaviour I would not write thus much for him and if I knew he did deserve it I should rather join to punish him than otherwise so leaving the cause to your consideration with remembrance of my best wished ever remain yours in all love to be commanded, Ralph Assheton.
