These are to certify that Richard Writington doth keep an inn in our town of Thursford and we have given him warning to be before your worships this [day?] and to show his licence, for we the constables have demanded the sight of his said licence, but he will not show it: but we find great misrule and much misorder by reason of the said inn, also the said Richard Writington doth use oftentimes to be drunken in his own house and also many others have been drunken there (as it is reported); also the said Richard Writtington hath railed against the justices of the peace: but when any constable or other officer hath found fault with the said Richard Writtington by reason of certain misdemeanours there committed, the said Writtington and his wife also have railed and reviled on the said constables and officers: neither do they sell their beer according to the statute, he selleth out at door and neighbours drink in his house both bread and beer continually… Also we do certify that Martin Chapman of our town doth draw beer without licence; by reason thereof there is now two alehouses in our poor town of Thursford aforesaid by reason of which said alehouses many are drawn unto idleness, and many men's servants by reason thereof neglect their master's business; which abuses being considered of, we whose names are here under written do earnestly crave of your worships, that the said two alehouses may be both of them put down, and not suffered to draw beer any longer, for our said poor town is altogether unfit and also unable to maintain any.
