The humble petition of the Minister, Constables, and Churchwardens of the parish of Flixton in the said County of Lancaster. Showeth that whereas the Sabbath or Lord's Day both now is and for a long time together hath been shamefully profaned and abused by disorders in excessive drinking and company-keeping in alehouses, both in time of Divine Service and sermon, but especially after Evening prayer till night as though it were a market day; and also whereas other great disorders are committed ordinarily on our public fast days, both in the time of the public exercises and afterwards also by like excessive drinking and company-keeping in alehouses (nurseries of all disorder), until many persons resorting [to] those places go home reeling, and staggering from the alehouses to their own houses; to the great dishonour of Almighty God, the great grief of many godly people, and of such as are well affected to religion, and to the great scandal of religion, and high contempt of your Ordinance of Parliament… The premises considered, your petitioner humbly craves that you would be pleased to take such course (according to Law and Ordinance of Parliament) for the redress of the disorders on the said days, as you in your wisdom shall think most fit: and your petitioners shall humbly pray etc.
