The humble petition of the inhabitants of Ditton and of some adjacent neighbours within Farnworth. Most humbly showeth that whereas your worships were pleased lately to send out your warrant signed with sundry of your hands to the Constables, and many others within the parish or Prescott to authorise and command them, that those good laws, both in respect of the observation of the Lord's day and fast days etc and others concerning alehouses to be observed; which hath been published in our Church: yet since that we find such disorder in some of our alehouses: which draw and sell drink at unlawful times, both on the Lord's days and fast days: we having but a part of town, and yet no less than eight alehouses. Now your petitioners do conceive (yet with submission to your wisdoms) that unless the most of these be suppressed: these statutes will not be observed… Therefore your petitioners do humbly beseech your honourable bench to suppress the most of these alehouses; the seminaries of all disorder, because out town doth not stand in any high road, and so your petitioners shall ever pray etc.
