Humbly showeth that whereas there is one John Wainwright of Chorlton (near Barlow Moor) who keeping an alehouse or tippling house there, your petitioner's husband doth commonly frequent the same and from time to time, (when he hath no money to pay at present) seal bonds to the said Wainwright to the value of twenty, at another time of forty and four shillings, and when the bond is sealed William Hurlbut your petitioner's husband with other two of his fellow-drunkards (to wit John Tomass and James Coppock) they set to it night and day to drink till all contained in the bond be come due: and then my husband being legally convicted for a common drunkard before our common Lord Sir George Booth in our own County in a poor revenge applieth himself... utterly... to undo and waste... to beggary, your poor petitioner and children who do not know how to set so much as a pot over the fire but it is in daily danger to be discharged for such debt… The premises considered your poor petitioner's humble request is that according to Justice the said Wainwright (who liveth under your Jurisdiction) may be suppressed rather than so many innocent poor wives and children should be utterly undone...
