Showeth that whereas one William Wright being a wandering and a suspicious person and formerly a companion with one William Watson (nor prisoner in the common gaol at Lancaster) was apprehended upon suspicion of felony forasmuch as he was thought to be aiding and assisting to the aforesaid William Watson, who hath upon his examination confessed that he hath broken the barn of Sir Thomas Barton Knight, and took out there divers of the goods of your petitioner, and the said William Wright coming into the town of Eccleston where your petitioner his abode is gave out very bad language against your petitioner, in these words (as by witness may appear) that he would either be your petitioner's death or your petitioner should be his, and that your petitioner should either give him a new year's gift or he would give your petitioner one; it hath now fallen out that this said suspected person hath escaped out of the constables hands, his pretence being that he would but go see a friend two miles [out] and he would return again to your petitioner at the time appointed and that in the meantime he would leave his tobacco and all he had in your petitioner his hands and your petitioner having granted his request could never hear of the said William Wright sinceā¦ The humble prayer of your petitioner is that you would be pleased to give order for the disposing of this tobacco containing in estimation about 20 pounds weight and consider your petitioner who hath been at great charges and taken great pains in the finding out the said William Wright and your petitioner shall ever pray.
