Humbly showeth that your petitioner's predecessor was licenced to keep an alehouse in the house wherein your petitioner now liveth, and your petitioner having been brought up with brewing and baking and used the same in gentlemen's houses where he hath lived and having no other occupation to live upon (is through the badness and false Informations of some malicious neighbours not as yet licenced to brew) being as your petitioner hopes to make it appear, one qualified for that Science, both for conversation of life and good usage of travellers, his house standing in the high road and within the town of Ashton-under-Lyne… Your Petitioner's humble request therefore is that Your Worships would be pleased to grant him a licence for alehouse keeping, he putting in good security to observe and keep all the statutes and Ordinances of Parliament in that case made and provided: and your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray for your health and happiness… We whose names are subscribed at the request of the petitioner make bold to certify, that we do believe the substance of this petition to be true and desire that his request may be granted wherein your worships will engage your loving friends.
