Humbly showeth that Richard Unsworth your poor petitioner's husband was a true and faithful soldier under command of Captain James Schofield and did good and faithful service unto the parliament during the time of these late unhappy wars and sithence died leaving your poor petitioner charged with maintenance of herself and three small children, trades decaying, very little to be gotten with work your petitioner not minded to cast herself upon the parish living in a convenient way in the high road near to a Smith betwixt Manchester and Rochdale did brew ale and beer to sell for the which she was convicted and sent unto the house of correction and there remained till she was released by order sithence Robert Wild her father obtained licence whereby to sell ale and beer and did employ your petitioner for brewing selling and delivering out the same, who did not anything in contempt but but only for relief of herself and small children and now warrant being issued forth for apprehension of your petitioner for so doing she is enforced to flee for security and her poor children must either starve or be cast as burdensome upon the parish… May it please your good worships the premises considered to withdraw such warrants as are already issued forth against your poor petitioner... and allow her to sell ale and beer for the said Robert Wild her father who is licenced for the same whereby she may be enabled in some measure to relieve herself and children and your petitioner as in duty bound will daily pray.
