The humble remonstrance or certificate of several inhabitants within the said Hundred as followeth. Right worshipful, it did not a little rejoice us that some months ago you seemed to enter upon a way for the reforming of several things amiss amongst us; as the multitude of unnecessary alehouses, bastardy, swearing and profanation of the Lord's Day etc. and for your further intelligence thereof, and better proceeding therein (at the appointment of our late Major General) you sent us several Articles to be enquired of: the truth of all which (according to the best of our knowledge) we did certify to your worships about which work we met several days, and spent much time therein, hoping that accordingly you would have proceeded to execution; of which offenders themselves also began to fear. And as yet we see little or no reformation thereof, but (far contrary to our expectation) many alehouse keepers by us presented to be unjust and unnecessary (and thereupon suppressed) have since from some of your procured licences: so that offenders are rather hardened in their bad practices; which is no small discouragement to us, hereafter to be employed in works of that nature (as of late we or some others by your worships are again called unto) which as yet we cannot be fully resolved to go on with till we see your further proceeding against offenders according to our former presentments which we humble conceive is your part to see executed (and if done) would be a great encouragement to us for the future, more cheerfully and readily to execute your commands (in works of that nature) notwithstanding all reproaches and calumnies that may be cast upon us. Thus hoping you will not be offended at us concerning the aforesaid premises we rest your worships humble servants etc.
