To the Right worshipful his majesty's Justices of the Peace and Quorum for the County Palatine of Lancaster humbly showeth that your petitioner John Eccles of Waterhouse in the parish of Ashton-under-Lyne in the parish of Lancaster feltmaker was so abused by strokes and blows by William Radcliff of Manchester alehousekeeper as unto your worships by honest and sufficient witness may unto your worships plainly appear in the said dwelling house of the said William Radcliffe in the Millgate in Manchester aforesaid that he the said John Eccles is utterly debarred from his hearing and made by reason of the said blows utterly disabled to understand anything that is beneficial to uphold him in his livelihood… May it therefore please your Worships to do the favour for your poor petitioners as to grant your worships warrant to bring before your worships the above named William Radcliff so that your poor petitioner may for his main receive some relief as unto your worship upon examination may seem meet and your petitioner as ever in duty will pray for your worships health and prosperity.
