Humbly complaining truly showeth that your petitioner about a year ago lived in Turton aforesaid, kept ale there to sell and discharged the duty of Excise for the same, yet now so it is about a year since or thereabouts she removed into a Cottage in Edgworth where she only brewed One load of malt at Christmas last and no more neither before nor since; for which load of malt she tendered for excise five shillings to the Commissioners of Excise which they refused and would not accept of But would have 13s 4d or else caused your petitioner to be summoned to appear before your worships at Manchester this day to your petitioner's great impoverishment… The premises considered may it please your worships to give Order that your petitioner may pay some reasonable duty of excise for the said load of malt she brewed as abovesaid and thereby be acquitted she being ready to aver the contents of this petition, and your petitioner (as in all duty bound) will pray for your worships in all happiness long to continue. Thus prays your petitioner… We whose names are subscribed being neighbours to the petitioner do verily believe the effect of this petition to be true.
