Humbly showeth that whereas your poor stark blind indigent petitioner William Wilson of Bury in the County of Lancashire alehousekeeper of the age of 60 years together with his wife aged 60 years both very infirm, the wife being drawn together and going bending with her face near the ground through some former diseases; hearing that he was indicted at the last quarter Sessions for baking of oaten cakes without licence whereas your petitioner was not warned nor had the notice of, nor in no capacity to go or ride as far as this town by reason of his blindness and other distempers upon him must of necessity (both he your humble petitioner [and his] said wife) be cast upon the charity of the Town where he lives, if deprived of the way that he lives in... May it therefore please your good worships the premises considered to order the stay of all such proceedings against your said poor blind petitioner and to remit the penalty hitherto imposed upon him and for the future he shall be duly observant of what is required of him according to his knowledge and poor power, ignorance and not wilfulness being the cause of the failure of his duty.
