The City Wit |
Performance | 1630 | Salisbury Court? | Children of the King's Revels? | CommentsAs there is no entry for The City Wit in Henry Herbert's records, the date of the first performance of the play has to be a matter of conjecture. 1630 is the usual date proposed (see Introduction). |
Performance | 1637 | CommentsBecause the second part of the prologue speaks of Ben Jonson as if he were dead, it has been hypothesised that this part of the prologue was written for a revival of The City Wit after Jonson's death in August 1637; however such a revival could have taken place any time between Jonson's death and the closure of the playhouses. G.E.Bentley (volume 3 p.59-60) develops this theory in some detail. |
